Choose washable matt or eggshell for walls by comparing the actual products, not just their names. Matt generally gives a flatter appearance; eggshell usually has more visible sheen. Cleaning performance, room suitability and preparation requirements belong to the specific coating.

For a room in Dundalk, begin with where the walls are touched, how they are lit and how you expect to clean them. A busy wall may suit a durable matt, while a low-sheen eggshell may be another option. Neither label guarantees the right result everywhere.

Compare wall appearance and cleaning needs

Look at the wall in side light. More sheen can make texture, filled patches and unevenness more noticeable. A flatter finish can reduce highlights, but it cannot remove underlying defects. Decide whether the existing surface needs repair before treating sheen as the solution.

Map contact areas: behind dining chairs, near switches, along a hallway or beside a kitchen bin. Describe the actual marks and cleaning needs. A product that copes with gentle wiping is not necessarily designed for every cleaner or repeated abrasive scrubbing.

Ask how the finish will look after cleaning as well as before it. Some marks can leave a different sheen where the coating is rubbed. Even a washable finish needs its specified cure and care method. Colour depth and lighting can make differences more visible.

Look beyond finish names to performance

Current manufacturer information gives a useful concrete comparison. Little Greene Intelligent Matt is listed as washable with a 2% gloss level. Its bathroom guidance describes Intelligent Eggshell as a washable low-sheen finish at 10-15%. These figures describe those products, not every matt and eggshell on the market.

The Dulux Decorator Centre matt comparison lists different scrub classes within matt products. That is a practical reason not to equate all matt paint with one cleaning performance. Check the current Irish product information before ordering.

Compare the intended substrate, room use, cleaning method and any declared test classification. Avoid treating a scrub class as proof that every stain can be removed. Abrasion resistance, stain resistance and resistance to moisture are related practical questions, but they are not interchangeable claims.

Match products to room conditions

A living room used mainly for sitting may have different demands from a kitchen, bathroom or busy stairwell. Start with the room's actual moisture, wear and cleaning conditions. Do not select by a universal rule that bedrooms always get matt and kitchens always get eggshell.

For bathrooms, coating suitability does not replace ventilation or repair an active leak. If there is recurring peeling, damp or mould, establish the cause before repainting. A colour or sheen change cannot settle that problem.

For a stairwell, consider both contact and lighting. A durable flat product may suit the desired appearance, while another low-sheen product may suit the agreed care needs. Compare samples on the real surface and read the relevant specification rather than buying whichever tin sounds toughest.

A hypothetical finish decision

Imagine a hallway with frequent hand marks near the stairs and strong light from a landing window. The household wants easy routine care but dislikes shiny highlights on old filled walls. Compare a specified durable matt with a suitable eggshell in the same intended colour.

The matt may meet the desired flatter appearance if its cleaning specification suits the use. The eggshell may be preferred if its appearance and care instructions fit the brief. If both expose uneven repairs, the decision returns to preparation rather than another finish name.

The result should be recorded as an exact product, colour and finish. Writing washable white or eggshell throughout leaves too much uncertain for application and later maintenance.

Distinguish wall systems from trim coatings

A wall eggshell and a woodwork eggshell can have different intended uses. Some current products cover several substrates, but you should verify that explicitly. Do not assume any wall finish can be rolled over previously varnished timber or unknown glossy paint without suitable preparation.

For doors and skirting, read satin, eggshell and gloss for woodwork. For the overhead surface, see painting ceilings. A coordinated room can use several compatible systems while maintaining the intended colour relationship.

If you share a colour across walls and trim, compare suitable physical samples of the final finishes. The difference in sheen can change how the colour appears. Keep product records so future touch-ups or cleaning use the correct instructions. Ask whether any declared performance depends on colour, base or the particular formulation supplied, rather than transferring a claim between products.

Set realistic maintenance expectations

Wait for the actual coating's specified readiness for cleaning. Touch dry is not the same as fully cured. Start with its recommended gentle method and test an inconspicuous area. Stop if colour transfers or the sheen changes rather than scrubbing harder.

For interior painting in Dundalk and nearby areas, send the room use, current condition and surface list. Photos begin the discussion, and a visit may be needed. The useful choice is a documented finish that suits the room and desired appearance, with clear care instructions.

Questions before you decide

Does a higher scrub class mean every stain will come off?

No. A declared test classification concerns the particular test and product. It is not a promise that every stain, cleaner or abrasive method is harmless. Read the coating care instructions and specified cure requirements. Some marks may penetrate, change the sheen or damage the surface. Start with the compatible gentle method, test discreetly and stop if the finish changes rather than interpreting a rating as permission for harder scrubbing.

Will eggshell hide old wall repairs better than matt?

More sheen can make some surface variations clearer under side lighting, so it should not be chosen as a universal repair-hiding solution. Compare appropriate samples on a properly prepared area and assess the underlying texture. If the repair is raised or uneven, preparation remains the issue. A flatter finish may reduce highlights, but no sheen name guarantees that an unsuitable repair or unstable coating will disappear.

Can the same colour look different in matt and eggshell?

Yes, their different light reflection can change the apparent relationship even when the intended colour reference matches. Compare the actual finishes in the room, particularly where a wall meets trim or panelling. Record the product as well as the colour name. A sample pot in another finish is useful for shortlisting but may not fully represent the chosen sheen or its appearance beside a neighbouring surface.
